Stellenbosch University's Facilities and Infrastructure
Stellenbosch University’s historic campuses and buildings are famously picturesque, but some structures are beginning to show signs of age and disrepair.
As part of the HOPE Project, a Facilities and Infrastructure Plan has been created to develop the campus facilities and infrastructure, old and new, needed to shape the next generation of African students, researchers, teachers and scholars while preserving the University’s rich architectural heritage. The objective is to create campuses where physical spaces are tied to strategic objectives. A key goal is to ensure that buildings become more efficient and environmentally friendly to minimize their costs and ecological impact.
The implementation of the Facilities and Infrastructure Plan will benefit teaching and learning, research and community interaction. Revitalising buildings on the Faculty of Health Sciences campus in Tygerberg, expanding health services to rural communities, new-generation classrooms and learning commons, a student academic support centre, a shuttle and transport network, improved access for persons with disabilities, new buildings for the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management, the Graduate School in Arts and Social Sciences and Bureau for Economic Research, upgrading the Conservatory and HB Thom drama building, as well as the Lentelus sports complex are some of the exciting projects envisaged.
