Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa

Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa (SIGLA)

Africa has a great need for strategic thinkers who can lead the continent well into the 21st century. Transformational leadership can help the continent overcome its political and governance challenges by harnessing skills and shaping talent into effective tools to develop and sustain African nations.

This is the vision that has led Stellenbosch University (SU) to establish the Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa (SIGLA). The Institute is aimed at building leadership capacity and generating knowledge resources for the continent in the areas of democracy, governance and security for sustainable development.

SIGLA is attached to the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) in Bellville. It also maintains strong links with the University’s Faculty of Military Sciences at Saldanha, one of only two military academies in Africa, and with the University’s School of Public Leadership, also in Bellville.

SIGLA offers advanced training through postgraduate leadership programmes. The target market is Africa’s leaders, both in the public and private sectors. The Institute also conducts research, commissions special studies and papers, and engages in policy advocacy in support of human security and a vibrant civil society. The achievement of human security is a crucial part of the continent’s developmental goals.

The Institute is continuously developing relationships with continental and international partners in the public and private sectors as well with civil society. SIGLA intends strengthening ties with such Africa structures as the AU, the Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, Africa’s regional economic communities and various national defence forces, as well as the Southern African Defence and Security Management Network.
